The past few weeks I read dozens of reviews on Maybelline’s latest lipstick, the Vivid Matte Liquid. The opinions differed… a lot. So what to do when in doubt? Right! Try one out yourself 🙂 Also wondering if you should add this lipstick to your stash? Keep on reading to find out!
The Vivid Matte Liquid lipstick is everywhere: commercials, billboards, magazines and dozens of beauty blogs around the world. I was a bit overwhelmed by it all. Reading the different views and opinions, I got more and more confused. There was only one thing left and that was trying out the lipstick myself.
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid
With the Vivid Matte Liquid, Maybelline adds 9 intense and vivid shades to their collection. A rich formula, created by mixing pure, matte pigments with a liquid base, promises lively colors and a smooth application with a matte finish. I chose the least bright color: 45 Possessed Plum.
The packaging of the lipstick is fairly basic with a plastic see-through tube and black screw-on top. It looks modern and simple but still fun with the color of the lipstick showing through. The bottles are not too large or small but just perfect to fit in your handbag.
So on to the swatch! The first thing that I noticed was the nice fragrance of the liquid. Once the liquid spread over my skin, a very sweet and fruity smell filled my nostrils. Very nice! The applicator is a bit on the large side, in my opinion. It is long and straight where I prefer a shorter one with a slanted tip. Luckily it does bend a little to slide better along your lips. The sponge takes up the liquid cream very well, but doesn’t score well for spreading the cream evenly on your lips.
It took me a while to find the best way to apply the lipstick. I found that dabbing the applicator to the bottle before letting it touch your lips gave me the best results and it was so much easier to spread out the lipstick. The downside here is that the top of the bottle gets dirty. The first time I tried on the lipstick, I hardly dabbed it and ended up with way to much cream on my lips that did not want to spread out nicely. My lips looked splotchy and messy with a clear line around my lips. Yuk! So, my tips here are to use the liquid sparsely, steadily layer it up to the color density you like and spread it open with the tip of the applicator using little to no pressure to get an even coverage.
Maybelline’s Vivid Matte Liquid lipstick in 45 Possessed Plum has a gorgeous deep brown color with reddish undertone. The color on my lips was a tad lighter than the one of the cream in the tube. Adding another laying made it look a bit darker, more plum-like but then I felt there was too much cream on my lips. It’s texture is soft and smooth but a matte finish I could not see. The liquid needs some time to set but the best result I got was a satin finish that holds for about 2 hours.
Possessed Plum or not?
The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in 45 Possessed Plum is a deep plum-colored lipstick with a satin finish, not matte. I found covering my lips with the intense color quite a task with the large applicator but eventually the result is very nice, if only for a short while. The color pay off is good but needs some layering up to get to the dark plum color. For sure, I am somewhat disappointed in the staying power of the liquid. If you are looking for a matte lipstick that keeps your lips covered for hours on end, I would skip this one. Have you tried the Vivid Matte Liquid?
